disastrous return from hiatus

Today, for the first time in a few years, I took out my merchant brig for a trading run, from Hunters Point to Tigerleaf, to sell some fruit.

Before I took my hiatus, I had been in the habit of helping a friend of mine sail his merchant ships from one archipelago to another. Back then, when we hired swabbies to help us, they were competent (if not exceptional). Also, with two players working with the default swabbies, it was unusal for us to get attacked by brigands and/or barbarians.

Today, however, we had a much different result.

First, the swabbies were FAR less capable then the ones from just a few years ago (regardless of whatever any of the GMs have said to me; I am basing this statement on OBSERVED RESULTS; swabbies from a few years ago were just enough to keep the Carpentry and Bilge meters mostly clear; not so today).

Second, the barbarians and brigands were FAR more aggressive than the ones from the last runs I had a few years ago. Instead of maybe one or two attacks per run, I was attacked EVERY OTHER LEAGUE at first, ending up with attacks EVERY LEAGUE.

Since I had sub-par NPC crew (as compared to results obtained from such runs just a couple of years ago), I had constant problems with maneuvering (due to the Damage Meters, as mentioned above). Thus, we were boarded each and every time we were attacked.

Furthermore, I was consistently out-numbered in each of these attacks, by two-to-one or worse. And since I have NEVER been worth a damn with the combat puzzles (Rumble and Swordfighting), we lost each and every fight.

As a result, I lost MORE THAN TWO-THIRDS of my cargo. (As documented in these excerpts, below, from my ship's log.)

June 7, 2010 4:54 PM - Franklincain sold 109 units of Rambutan.
June 7, 2010 5:20 PM - Franklincain transferred away 106 units of Pineapples.

(Pumping these records into a spreadsheet gave me a total number of units equal to 692. Since I docked with 215 units (109+106), that means I lost the other 477 units. However, in the interest of fairness, anyone who is interested in doing so is more than welcome to double-check my numbers by manually adding up my losses.)

I reported these problems to the GMs (via Petition), but each time the GM in question either did not understand the problems I was citing or else ignored most of them and addressed only one of them.

I was wanting to give Puzzle Pirates another try. It had been several years, and they had released a couple of new puzzles. Based on this experience, I find it highly unlikely that I will be spending any money on any more Doubloons.
